Introduction

The Magpie Files is a Dragon Age: The Veilguard (DATV) fanfic series centring on Lucanis Dellamorte, the Antivan Crows, and the OC Magpie "Mags" de Riva (also known as Magpie Rook). The series is influenced by both detective noir and Gothic fiction.

Magpie is warm and personable, and often awkward, but they're also an assassin of the Antivan Crows. They have a tendency toward cunning plans that create as many problems as they solve (but they make a lot of friends this way.) They follow their own rules, and are generally determined to protect anyone and anything they see as theirs. Magpie is genderfluid and uses multiple pronouns, including they/he/she.

Where to start? Magpie first appeared in A Working Relationship, Act 1 of The Lights Out Job, a pre-canon Lucanis/Rook story. The pitch:

A young Rook is assigned to a suicide mission. Viago insists that Lucanis keep them alive. Rook begins to consider the merits of seduction. [Ao3]

Also known as Magsverse, the stories of The Magpie Files occur in Magpie's "main" continuity. 

The Lights Out Job

Length: Each of the three acts will be approximately 65k words, while interludes will be 5-20k.

Summary: A young Crow of House de Riva is given an offer they can't refuse, for a contract in Minrathous they're not supposed to survive. Forced to accept the help of a stranger of much higher rank, they must face their fears and realize that there's more at stake in Minrathous than two mercenary assassins and their contracts. As innocents are led to the slaughter, they alone will need to learn to accept their power and become who they really are, monstrosity and all.

This is the story of what it means to choose the name Magpie de Riva.

A Working Relationship (Act 1)

  • Crow Games - Complete (Lucanis/Rook, M, 3k) A fledgling from a small Crow house gets caught up in the game of Talons, as two Crows meet for a secret rendezvous and have to deal with a haphazard assassination attempt. Outsider POV. Set before the Antaam occupation of Treviso.

  • All Because of You - Complete (past Lucanis/Rook, Viago & Rook, T, 1300 words) In a year, Magpie will need to tell Lucanis about their planned attempt to assassinate his traitorous cousin. Right now, Viago just needs to keep them alive. Set after Lucanis is captured and the Antaam invade Treviso.

  • Despite Everything - Complete. (Spite/Lucanis, Spite/Lucanis/Rook, E, 6k) Established Lucanis/Magpie, post-breakup. They dream together and Spite hitches a ride alongside Magpie's dreaming self. What is it like, to be wanted by Lucanis Dellamorte? Demon POV. Set during the events of DATV.

If you read this immediately after The Lights Out Job, which occurs several years earlier, you should be aware that A) Magpie does not have the same respectful relationship with Illario as canon Rook, and B) Magpie is always willing to play the bad guy.

Summary: In this Illario-centric dark future fic about torture and revenge, "Rook" loses. Elgar'nan is on his way. Illario has a score to settle, and he and Magpie both know it.

AU Notes: Part of the author's Omri de Riva continuity, Magpie acts as an antagonist to a dwarven Crow Rook. This is a darker take on the Crows than the Magpie Files continuity, particularly when it comes to Viago.

Summary: Effectively rescued from the Crows by Lace and Varric, Omri can finally breathe. Killing a pair of ancient mages everyone calls "gods" is a small price to pay for his freedom. It isn't until Neve suggests bringing the infamous mage-killer Lucanis Dellamorte onto the team that he realizes the leash is still firmly around his neck.
